Skyler looked around at everyone with a mischievous smile\u2014one we had all come to recognize after a few hours. It meant she was about to do something bold. She rose carefully from her seat on the old leather sofa. Meanwhile, the white line grew longer and longer from her mouth to the cup. Everyone watched in hushed suspense. It was almost like an artistic circus performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One thing was certain: none of us had ever experienced anything like this before joining this walking tour in Bogot\u00e1. Even the Latinos in the group looked dazzled. Suddenly, Jorge, the Brazilian, began his ascent at a much slower pace, trying to catch up with Skyler Night. That was the name of the Dutchwoman. Little by little, we all started our own journey. I myself\u2014always easily excitable\u2014started out too fast and quickly saw defeat. I watched the white elastic line fall back down with a soft splat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some in our group seemed to have innate skills. For example, Mar\u00eda, the Chilean, danced from one side to the other without her line falling apart. In fact, it seemed to help it lengthen faster. In the blink of an eye, hers was already one of the longest. Meanwhile, Caleb, the Norwegian, dared to jump and gave a smug smirk when his line didn\u2019t break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Santiago, the barista who enjoyed everything, dared to give some rules:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou\u2019re not allowed to grab with your hands\u2014and definitely no starting over.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our guide, Juan Felipe, heard chanting and turned around to see several people passing by the window offering encouragement. They sang, whistled, and called out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCome on, come on!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThat\u2019s how we Colombians are\u2014we find fun in everything,\u201d<\/strong> Felipe explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One by one, the lines fell, and you could see the disappointment on each owner\u2019s face. Out of a group of eleven people on this walking tour in Bogot\u00e1, only three were still standing, their eyes fixed on Felipe and Santiago, who had been confirmed as the judges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Dutchwoman wins!\u201d<\/strong> Santiago announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The longest line belonged to Skyler. It was to be expected\u2014she was the tallest of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Skyler Night opened her mouth, and the line of melted cheese plummeted quickly but harmoniously over the big cup of hot chocolate. All the Colombians shouted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLong live the queen of chocolate with cheese!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
