Who Was the First?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I asked myself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow was it possible? Who could have been the first person to even think: look, if we pull this root out of the ground, peel it, boil it, mash it with salt, shape it into a ball, flatten it\u2026 and just like that, however each person prefers, we\u2019ll have a delicacy so delicious that one day it will become national and be sold on almost every corner of Bogot\u00e1?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was sitting at a square table, on an ordinary day, between the wise frailej\u00f3n and the butterflies that always get excited with so much cacao fruit. I stared carefully at the shaman painted on the walls and, of course, I asked myself the same question so many people ask me now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On every Food Tour in Bogot\u00e1<\/strong>, many visitors ask me the same thing when they see that brown, wrinkled, dirt-covered root.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes, it\u2019s a root,\u201d I tell them. \u201cBelieve it or not, we eat a root.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then she insisted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut how was it possible? Who could have been the first to think: look, if we pull out the root, peel it, boil it, mash it with salt, make a ball, flatten it, and fry it in hot oil\u2026?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A delicacy so delicious, so ours, that today it\u2019s sold on almost every corner of Bogot\u00e1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow did anyone come up with it? Who was the genius\u2014if it was just one?\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I imagine a native man or woman showing the discovery to their companions, eating first so the others wouldn\u2019t be afraid of poisoning themselves with that new thing that came from the earth and that they had never seen before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then I remember\u2014so I can answer her, the tourist, and myself the first time\u2014the words a mamo once told me in a tribe I visited years ago:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSometimes it\u2019s simply like that. There\u2019s no need to overthink it or ask too many questions. Just enjoy it: it\u2019s here now. And we won\u2019t have to endure stomach aches anymore just to try it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
